Ruben Femat

–

Mission, Texas

Born on August 24th, 1950, to Carlos and Amelia Femat in McAllen, Texas, Ruben Femat was raised and lived in Mission, Texas all his life.
Ruben attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School, Mission High School and Pan American University.  He also served honorably in the United States Army. Ruben attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where he received all his sacraments.

Ruben worked as a social worker for MET Inc. and also devoted some time to the family business, T Femat & Co. where he assisted and restocked small businesses from throughout the valley.

Ruben married Selma Perez on June 21st, 1975,and welcomed two children, Marissa Ileana Femat and Sergio Ruben Femat to whom he devoted his life. He was blessed with his daughter-in-law Celina Michelle Femat and his four grandchildren, Alyssa Brianna Rodriguez, Cassandra Renae Femat, Samuel Isaiah Femat, and Caylee Rae Femat. They completed his “party of nine.” He loved spending time with them, to eat out, watch TV, and attend every game, concert, recital, peprally, track meet, UIL meet, birthday party, and celebration. They were his life.

Ruben was a civic leader serving in many capacities. He was involved with the Mission Chamber of Commerce, being the first Hispanic president of the chamber. He served on the Mission CISD School Board for ten years and was president for two terms. He was also a member of the Hidalgo County Private Industry Council and the City of Mission’s Civil Service Commission. His participation with the St. Paul’s men’s choir and ACTS retreat family was close to his heart and gave him great joy.

Somehow, with all that community service, Ruben still found the time to coach T-Ball, baseball, basketball, football, and track when Sergio was a youngster and never missed a practice or a game when Sergio played football. The teams he coached became his family when he barbecued for them or just had them come to his house to play basketball or throw a football around.

Family trips were always fun and always included an extra child or two who were like family to him.

Ruben was a devoted Mission Eagle supporter and he and his family attended most football, basketball, and volleyball games both at home and away for most of his adult life. He then became a Mission Veterans fan and a McAllen Bulldog and a Nikki Rowe Warrior as he supported his grandchildren.

Ruben is survived by his loving wife Selma, his children Marissa, Sergio, and daughter-in-law Celina and his four grandchildren Alyssa, Cassandra, Samuel, and Caylee. His three devoted siblings Rebeca Femat Velasco, Carlos Felipe Femat, and Dora Femat De la Garza and numerous cousins whom he loved dearly, surrounded him during his lifetime.

Ruben also nurtured a very loving relationship with his Perez family Roy and Sylvia Cavazos, Tomas and Mary Lou Perez, and Ricardo and Irma Perez and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents Amelia and Carlos Femat and his parents-in-law Sigifredo and Juanita Perez.

Holidays and special events always brought together Ruben’s family that included his wonderful nieces and his nephews who were so honored to be pallbearers. They include; Aden T. Femat, Omar Cavazos, Dario Cavazos, Javier Cavazos, Marco Perez, Geraldo Perez, Jaime Perez, and Rogelio Alejandro Velasco.

Honorary pallbearers include the St. Paul’s Men’s Choir members

The family expresses their sincere gratitude to the staff at Alfredo Gonzalez Rehab Center and Opus Hospice Care for their loving and tenderhearted care and to all the family and friends that have given us so much love and support.
