Mission, Texas
Our mother, Maria del Socorro, was born to Maria Matilde Lopez and Rafael Diaz De Leon in the summer of 1948 in Villa de Pozos, SLP Mexico. Through her youth, she accompanied her mother, learned to be a seamstress, and used her skills to cook and clean for upper-class families to keep her brothers and sisters fed. After her father exited their lives early on, her mother eventually found a soulmate in Rito Portales, and their union united both households; providing much-needed love and stability.
She eventually met and married our dad, Mariano Torres, and soon after, they made the brave choice to their way north to the Texas border. There, they worked hard to make ends meet while saving enough to become legal residents and begin to build a loving home for our family. She kept her family together through periods of poverty and strife, ensuring we had enough food and clothes to wear in a land and language foreign to her.
Mom spent most of her life working at the Pride O’Tex as a citrus packer, and alongside her family as a migrant worker harvesting the orchards and fields of upstate NY and MI. Her generosity never faltered. We witnessed her inviting homeless kids over to eat with us and at times feeding passersby in need.
She devoted herself to her family and her community. Always making the most of life as it came. She will missed, but we thank God for giving us time with such a wonderful, loving soul of a mother.
She is survived by her loving husband Mariano, her sons and daughters Mario, Myrna (Isaac), Jose (Michael), Maria, Juan (Jessica), Andres, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.
Amen
