McAllen, Texas
In Loving Memory
Jerry Wayne Oden,
Jerry was a proud Air Force veteran, a devoted husband, a hardworking man, and someone who lived life on his own terms. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, he carried his Southern roots with him throughout his life, even as his journey took him to Michigan, where he built a life, a career, and lasting memories.
As a young man, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he graduated from Detroit High School. He later settled in the Port Huron area, where he continued to work hard and provide for those he loved. A proud member of the labor union, he dedicated many years to his trade as a cement mason and foreman before retiring. His strong work ethic, dedication, and hands-on approach to life were a reflection of the man he was.
Beyond his career, he was also a restaurant owner, operating Powers Diner and creating another chapter in a life filled with hard work, independence, and memorable experiences.
He willingly joined the United States Air Force to serve his country in London England during the Vietnam War, a chapter of his life that reflected his commitment, courage, and sense of duty. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life special. He loved playing poker, enjoying a good bourbon, and heading into the woods for deer and pheasant hunting. These were more than hobbies; they were part of the life he enjoyed and the memories he made along the way.
One of the greatest parts of his life was his marriage to his beloved wife, Suzanne, which spanned 51 years. Through decades of life’s ups and downs, they shared a lasting partnership built over a lifetime together. His love for his family, his loyalty, and his own unique way of doing things will remain a part of the memories cherished by those who knew him.
After retirement, he spent approximately 25 years living in McAllen, Texas, enjoying a new chapter of life away from the demands of his long career.
He also had a special place in his heart for his dogs, Ping and Lady. In a final reflection of the things that mattered most to him, he wanted to be laid to rest in Alabama, alongside his family and beloved companions, returning to the place where his story began.
He was proceeded in death by Akan Oden (Father), Mary Earl McInnes (Mother), MaryAnn (Grant) Roberston (Sister), Tracy Oden (Ralph Corretjer) (Daughter), Felicia Corretjer (Granddaughter), Jade Kelley (Granddaughter)
He is survived by Suzanne Oden (Spouse), Simone (Orville) Reid (Sister), Gary (Laurie) Oden(Brother), Wendy Kelley (Daughter), Tish Simmons (Daughter), Troy Oden (Son), David Kelley (Son), Bailey (Paul) Pionk (Granddaughter), Jennifer (Jake) Nemecek (Niece), Shelby Oden (Granddaughter), Brandon (MacKenzie) Oden (Grandson), Sky Kelley (Granddaughter), Rebecca (Cody) Bricker (Niece), Charlie Simmons (Grandson), Elliot Simmons (Grandson), Sanchia Simmons (Granddaughter), And Six Great Grandchildren.
From Birmingham to Detroit and the Port Huron area, and eventually to McAllen, his life was one of service, hard work, adventure, and lasting bonds. He leaves behind a legacy shaped by his dedication, his love for the outdoors, his friendships, and the memories he created throughout his life.
He will be remembered with love, respect, and gratitude by all those fortunate enough to have known him. Though he will be deeply missed, his stories, his spirit, and the mark he left on the lives around him will live on.
May he rest in peace, reunited with Ping and Lady, and forever at home in Alabama.
