Geraldine Irene DeAnda Obituary (1940 - 2024)

Geraldine "Gerry" Irene DeAnda, 84, of McAllen, Texas, passed away on February 25, 2024. She was born on January 24, 1940, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Gerry grew up in South St. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated with a teaching degree from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, MN. Gerry, known for her warm heart and gentle spirit, had a fulfilling career as a St. Benedictine nun serving as a teacher in Minnesota, then as a missionary in Brazil for over 25 years. She then found the love of her life, Luis, married, moved to Mexico and and they became the Owner/Teachers of the school, Colegio Bilingüe Vista del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico, and finally, retired in Mission and McAllen, Texas. She dedicated her life to education and service. In her free time, Gerry was a voracious reader, enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles, and caring for animals. She was a staunch political activist. She is survived by her sisters, Patty Siegert and Phyllis Petropolous, numerous nieces and nephews, and many close friends, including special friend Ignacio (Nacho) Gomez Martinez. Gerry was preceded in death by her husband, Luis DeAnda, her parents, Mary and Ralph Luke, and her brother, James Luke. A memorial service will be held in Oaxaca, Mexico, at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to any animal or pet shelter or any Catholic charity in honor of Gerry. The Ric Brown Funeral Home in Mission, Texas, is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements. Gerry will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of kindness and compassion will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
