Charles L. Mancil Obituary (1947 - 2024)

"Charles La Vern Mancil, 77, passed away on February 12, 2024, after a courageous battle with bladder cancer that metastasized to the spine. Born on January 3, 1947, in Clinton, Louisiana, he was the son of Connie Walley and Arlin Mancil. Charles juggled two jobs for many years, working tirelessly at the Rock Island Arsenal while also pursuing his passion for building and renovation on the side. Even after retiring from the arsenal, he remained dedicated to his craft. A kind-hearted and generous soul, Charles was known for his unwavering commitment to his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, and grandpa, whose presence was larger than life and brought joy to all who knew him. Charles's sense of humor was infectious, and his playful spirit brightened even the darkest of days. He was a steadfast protector, always ready to offer support and encouragement to those in need. An avid fisherman, Charles found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature, particularly while fishing for walleye and Northern in Canada. He was also a skilled poker player and enjoyed the camaraderie of friendly competition with friends. In his leisure time, Charles could often be found immersed in the pages of western fiction and legal thrillers, indulging his love for storytelling and adventure. Despite facing adversity, Charles approached life with bravery and resilience, overcoming challenges with grace and humility. His hardworking nature and dependable character were admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Charles leaves behind a heritage of love, kindness, and selflessness that will continue to inspire generations to come. He proudly served his country in the Army from 1967 to 1969 and in the Army Reserves for several years after that, embodying the values of duty and honor throughout his life. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Donna Mancil, and cherished by their children: Christine Mancil-Bervig, Kimberly Paustian, and Heather Mancil. His legacy lives on through his beloved grandchildren: Carlie Johnson, Chase Martin, Landon Martin, Grace Paustian, Ana Paustian, and Isaiah Paustian. He also leaves behind his foster father, Millard Nelson, along with foster sisters Ann Rowland, Linda Martin, and Laurie Biedermann, and foster brother Mark Nelson. He joins in eternal rest his mother, Connie Walley, father, Arlin Mancil, sisters Anita Bradshaw, Joyce Schneckloth, Wanda Bolton, brother Paul Mancil, and foster mother, LaVonne Nelson. A celebration of Charle’s life will be held at the Rock Island Arsenal on June 14, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. All attendees will congregate in the Wyndham Moline on John Deere Commons parking lot at 9:15 a.m. (1415 River Drive, Moline, IL 61265), so we can arrive in one procession as required by the Arsenal. In this time of sorrow, we find comfort in the cherished memories and the enduring heritage of a man who touched so many lives with his compassion, humor, and unwavering love."
