Obituary – Verna Mae Boler

February 27

PHARR – Verna Mae Boler, 100 years of age, went to meet her Lord and Savior on the night of February 22, 2018. Verna Mae was born in Peoria, Illinois on May 13, 1917. Her mother, at the age of 19, could not support her. She was adopted by her wonderful and loving parents, who could not have children of their own; Oliver Carson and Nettie Laura Brown. At the age of 3, she and her family moved to Pharr, TX, where she has lived ever since. Verna Mae had another sister, also adopted, who she loved so very much- Margaret Brown (Lemaire). Verna Mae attended First Baptist Church of Pharr for almost 90 years. Verna Mae attended Carnahan Elementary and her teacher was… Ms. Carnahan. Verna Mae worked in the school cafeteria for $2.40 cents a week, and that was a lot! She used to tell a story how Edd, her husband, took her to the HUB Café in Pharr and bought them 2 hamburgers, 2 fries, and 2 drinks for $.25 cents… He could have forgone the fries and drink for $.10 less. Verna Mae worked at Martin’s Café (Now the Junction Café) and the Pharr post office. One day, Edd Millhollen Boler and his cousin Bill Barnes, passed by the post office and saw Verna Mae. Edd told his cousin, “One day, I’m going to marry that girl”! They married on July 27, 1939, after 6 months- to the day of courtship. Edd and Verna Mae operated and ran several produce outfits before opening Boler Farms Produce, which still stands today, at 2 N. Cage Blvd. in Pharr. Edd passed away on March 27, 2003 but Verna Mae kept going strong. She continued to go down and “Run” the family business until she was 93 in 2011. Verna Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Oliver C. Brown, Nettie L. Brown, Husband Edd M. Boler, Daughter Betty Boler, and Daughter June Boler (Schwarz). She is survived by her daughter Judith Ann Chavez (Armando Chavez), grandson Gabriel Boler Chavez (Mitzi Chavez), granddaughter Julia Vernesa Chavez, and great grandchildren- Zaira Chavez, Matthew Boler Chavez, and Ethan Boler Chavez. She also had her niece and nephews who she adored with all her heart- Linda (Larry), Frankie, Gerald.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 26, 2018, from 3-7 at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Pharr. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen.
Services are under the direction of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission.
