Obituary – George T. Helle

January 12, 2019

George Thompson Helle of Mission, age 87, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital.

George was born in 1931, in Yonkers, NY and is preceded in death by his parents, George Adolf Helle and Elsie Elizabeth MacNamee.

In 1947, George and his parents moved to the Rio Grande Valley from Yonkers, NY. He graduated from Mission High School in 1949, attended Pan American College and worked for Sun Oil Company for 10 years while also farming part-time. Later he began farming full-time and became one of the top cotton farmers in Hidalgo County and in 1969 was recognized by the Department of Agriculture for his innovative techniques. Eventually his sons Tommy and Mike joined him to form Helle Farms. In total George farmed for over 50 years.

George and Shirley, his wife of 17 years, lived in Laguna Vista,Tx and Port Isabel ,TX, where they were members of St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church. They also enjoyed spending their summers at their mountain home in Todd, NC. George loved the outdoors and had many interests and hobbies including flying airplanes, breeding race horses, running, motorcycling, boating and fishing with his family on Falcon Lake. George often said that his greatest accomplishment was his family.

George is survived by his children George Thompson Helle Jr. of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, MX, Linda (Lee) Lyles of Charlotte, NC, Anne (Robert) Dose, of Dobbin, TX, Michael Helle of Edinburg, TX and Lorraine (Chuck) Burns of Raymondville, TX; his 13 grandchildren, Trey (Michelle) Helle of Houston, TX, Nicole (Sam) Robbins of Mission, TX, Eddie Helle of Houston ,TX, Catherine Helle of Mission, TX, Marianne Lyles of Austin, TX, William Lyles of Portland, OR, Christy (Chad) Burgoyne of Santa Barbara, CA, Sonny, Dillon and Tori Burns of College Station, TX; and his seven great grandchildren, Lane, Georgia, Wyatt, Levi, Sydney, Jack and Siena.

The family would like to thank his friends and caregivers at The Gardens at Brook Ridge Assisted Living Community.

A memorial service to remember and celebrate George Helle’s life will be held, Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission, TX.

Services are under the direction of the Ric Brown Family Funeral Home of Mission.
