Obituary – Gavino “Gabby” Garza

September 14

MISSION – It is with great sadness that the family of Gavino Garza announces his passing. Gavino “Gabby” Garza, 88, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at Mission Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 3, 1930, in Mission, TX, to the late Emilia Reyna Garza and Anastacio Garza. He married Eliza Garza in 1952 and together they were blessed with 6 children.
He loved God, family, work and enjoyed spending time with his loved ones. He was a devout Catholic, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, better known to them as “Grandpa Vino”. He will be best remembered as a hardworking, loving, gentle, kind and generous man who had a great sense of humor. He was a proud graduate of Mission High School and instilled the importance of education in his children. He worked at Barrera’s Supply Co for 58 years and retired in 2008. He was an avid golfer and loved playing at the Shary Golf Course. He was instrumental in organizing the Summer Little League Baseball programs in Mission where he also volunteered as a baseball coach for over 15 years. He loved Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where he married and where he faithfully served his parish. He was also a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Mission where he attended Mass.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Eliza G. Garza, brothers Guadalupe Garza and Oscar Garza, sisters Olivia Gonzalez and Sofia Hernandez, granddaughter Adrianna B Garza and great grandchildren Leopoldo J Calvillo and David N Harden.
Gavino is survived by his 6 children; 3 daughters Sylvia I Charles (Anastacio), Elizabeth Garza (Leopoldo, Jr.), Veronica A “Betty” Morrell (James) of La Feria; 3 sons Gavino “Gabby” A Garza (Judy), Daniel “Danny” R Garza (Haydee) of Sanger, CA, and David E Garza (Patricia) of Pharr; his brother Ricardo Garza (Norma) of Seguin; his sister Maggie Silva (Ramiro);17 grandchildren Anthea Calvillo (John), Denise Harden (Rick), Amanda Garza, Michael Charles, Daniel Garza, Jr, Eric Charles, Nicholas Garza (Cassandra), , Karina Ledesma (Javier), Gabriel Garza (Danica), Cassandra Garza, Brianna Garza, Jacob Gavino Garza, Taylor Morrell, Brandi Morrell, Gabriella Garza, Jalen Morrell, Kaleb Garza; 7 great-grandchildren John Paul Calvillo II, Kendrah Garza, Ethan Charles, Katherine Calvillo, Javier Ledesma III, Clarissa Garza and Kayden Spaunhurst plus numerous brothers and sisters in law, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive family and friends on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a rosary at 7 pm at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission. A Mass and celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Mission. Honored to serve as pallbearers will be Anastacio Charles, Leopoldo Garza, Jr., James K Morrell, grandsons and close friend Dan Barrera.
Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens. Funeral services are under the direction of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home.

    Condolences to the Garza family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your whole family. Psalms 147:3 says God, “heals the broken hearted, and binds up their wounds.” May God bring you comfort and peace.
