MISSION – Specialist Alberto Garcia Jr., 28, died battling service-connected cancer on April 27, 2018 at Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio, TX. Being a true Soldier, he fought cancer up until the very last moment and always put others ahead of himself and his illness. Specialist Garcia was born in Mission, TX on December 07, 1989 to his parents Alberto Garcia Sr. and Abigail Garcia.
Alberto was raised in Mission and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a gun enthusiast. He will be remembered for his love of Country Music, “King George”, and the Dallas Cowboys. His favorite people to be around were his family and he was known to put together a bar-b-que on the spur of the moment. He is described by loved ones and former colleagues as a positive person with a strong work ethic. Alberto loved telling people he was a “MexiCAN”, not a “MexiCANT” with a big smile.
Specialist Garcia enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 19, 2012 as a Track Vehicle Repairer (91H). During his time in the Army, he was stationed at Camp Casey in South Korea, as well as Fort Riley, Kansas. He was well decorated and received many awards including the Army Commendation Medal, several Army Achievement Medals, Joint Meritorious Award, as well as the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Alberto is survived by his wife Gabriela Garcia, parents Alberto Garcia Sr. and Abigail Vela Garcia; his sister Yahaida Ruiz and husband Lary Ruiz; sister Jessica Solis and husband Armando Solis Jr., a niece Gwendolyn E. Solis, and two nephews Alexander Ruiz and Azrael M. Solis.
