Longtime Mission resident, Maria Ella Garza passed away peacefully Monday, March 14, 2016 at the age of 90.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Reymundo Garza; brothers Ismael Moreno, Willie Moreno; her sister Fay Moreno Urquidez; parents, Nicholas Moreno and Anita Pallanez Moreno, and daughter, Gloria Garza Plummer.
She is survived by her children, Anna Ward, George W. Garza, Rebecca Cochran, Richard Garza and Ray Garza; grandchildren (Jeff B Ward, Andrew Nicholas Ward, Lori Wasielewski) and 3 great-grandchildren (Amory Mayberry, Madison Ward, Isabel N Ward, Aidan Wasielewski, Zander Wasielewski and Malcolm Wasielewski).
Ella was born in West Texas and lived in Alpine. At the age of 19 she worked at the Marfa Air Base, Marfa, Texas during WWII, as a mechanic’s assistant where she met Ray, who worked in accounting as a clerk. They married in Alpine Tx in July 1944 and moved to the Rio Grande Valley.
She spent her early married years being a devout wife and mother, then in her early forties went to work in the Mission Consolidated Independent School District as a teacher’s aide. This was the start of a new era for Ella. It began with learning to swim and drive and shortly afterwards got her GED, enrolled in Pan American University, received her BA degree and went on to A & I in Kingsville to get her Masters Degree, the entire time taking care of husband and small children, as well as, working full time. She spent the next 22 years pursuing her career in education.
Ella was active in community work, a long time member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, where she was very active in the Damas Catolicas. She also participated in a prayer group for 25 years that visited the elderly sick at Mission Nursing Home. She and her husband were Eucharist Ministers for St Paul’s since the onset of the program.
Viewing will be from 5 to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2016 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Mission. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission.
